News on April, 2009

Professor Shozo Kaneko was appointed the Deputy Director of CEE (Collaborative Research Center for Energy Engineering) as of April 1st, 2009, still maintaining the position of the head of the Endowed Research Unit "Advanced Energy Conversion Engineering".
This CEE was established in January, 2008,as a representing research center of the University of Tokyo in the area of "Energy Engineering", combining the research forces both in the Departments of Engineering (at Hongo campus), and in the Institute of Industrial Science (at Komaba Campus).

The Global Warming Issue is now reported frequently in newspapers.
The" Mid-term Target Study Committee" held its 7th and final meeting on April 14th and summarized its result reflecting its continued study since last November.
This Study Committee was established as an under-organization of the "National Study Committee on the Global Warming Issue" reporting to the Prime Minister.
The Sub-committee report recommended six candidate plans as the Mid-term Target for 2020, to be adopted by the Prime Minister in June. Until then, nation-wide public hearing or hearing by e-mail will be held for about a month. By our study, if the Plan No. 3 is adopted, the allowable CO2 emission for each fuel in the thermal power plants will be as shown in the following picture.
This means remarkable efficiency increase in thermal power plants is urgently needed. We understand our mission is now more important and valuable than before to realize this target in the earliest time frame.
